Lake Simcoe Residence
Located on a 5.8 acre waterfront site on the north shore of Kempenfelt Bay on Lake Simcoe, the bold modern design was inspired by the client’s desire for a single storey residence where every room has a view of the lake through walls of glass.
The house is broken down into a grouping of linked volumes, with a composition of vertical stone walls and horizontal zinc-clad overhangs. The master bedroom wing is connected to the main house through a glass walkway which creates a sheltered landscaped courtyard between the two volumes.
Inside, the lofty living and dining room is anchored at one end by a dramatic 15-foot high stone clad fireplace that extends outside into the landscape at the end of a 65-foot long covered terrace. A portion of this terrace has retractable insect screens to provide a generous screened porch for outdoor dining. The recreation room has its own covered terrace that provides shading for the south facing façade.
Passive House and sustainable design measures have ben incorporated into the design to reduce the carbon footprint of the house through energy modelling optimization.
